My Parents dog has skin infection. What can I do to help?

I am dog sitting and the dog has a skin infection. I think he might be allergic to something. His back in the last 4 days has gotten worse. I had put Peroxide on it to help, but then left it alone thinking it would clear up. It has not. Its about 4"x4" on both side of his lower back/butt. The hair is gone and it looks like its eaten down a layer of skin.... Poor dog! Can I put anything on it to help. I have an appt for the Vet, but not until Saturday. I am waiting for the tech to call me back, any suggestions what it could be? or what to use on it. I know he probably needs antibiotic. Help

Just put some Vaseline on it for now. Peroxide is probably just going to dry it out and irritate it more. Vaseline will possibly keep it from itching and keep him from biting/scratching at it. That's really all you can do until Saturday. Hopefully the tech will have more advice for you.

Reply:Flea allergy dermatitis presents most severely along the back down to the tail, down the back of the legs and in the groin, and it sounds like that is what you're describing. Do NOT use hydrogen peroxide on open skin infection sores, it will only damage the tissue and delay healing.





What your dog needs is a flea bath, antibiotics and oral prednisolone to stop the itch and heal the sores. Monthly application of Frontline or Advantage and a serious scouring and spraying of all areas in which he habitates to eradicate fleas are necessary to prevent this from happening.
Reply:Give the dog Benadryl to relieve the itching until you can get him to a vet. If you have problems getting him to take it, put it in a piece of butter or some other treat that he will eat.


If you're in doubt about giving Benadryl, call the vet and ask.
Reply:Have you changed his food recently? Food allergies often cause itching in that area. Could also be a flea allergy and scratching/rubbing that area. I have used Neem Oil spray for minor skin irritations, vitamin E oil (just squeezed out of the capsules and rubbed into the area), and aloe straight from the plant. I don't know about the peroxide unless its really oozing and recommended by the vet, seems that would dry up his skin and irritate it even more. See what the tech says when she calls back, if he seems really itchy, they may tell you to give him benedryl till they can see him saturday, or have you wash him with a medicated shampoo or oatmeal bath (aveeno type stuff)
Reply:keep clean with peroxide, I had bought an antibacterial shampoo bath it and then use triple antibiotic ointment in. Document everything you do so you can tell the vet.
Reply:Take it to the vet...Is the rash on it's stomach as well?? The poor dog my be allergic to grass(weird,huh?)
Reply:Don't touch it because it could be mange and might be contagious.
